Santa Rosa County 4-H Ambassadors have received a grant to increase awareness of both 4-H and Disaster Preparedness in our area. There are several facets of the grant that all work together to accomplish the goal.
Teen CERT is the glue that holds the project together. By becoming a vital part of the awareness and rescue community, 4-Hers are becoming more aware of the importance of preparedness. Their Teen CERT role throught he Santa Rosa County EOC will increase awareness of how much 4-H youth have to offer.
GPS and GIS technology, awareness and training is the next step in the project. 4-H members in Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa Counties are working together to use GPS and GIS technology to have fun while making major contributions to the community. Escambia County 4-Hers will be mapping fire hydrants, and Santa Rosa County 4-Hers will be mapping points of distribution and service centers for their county Emergency Operations Centers.
Geocaching is another major part of the project. With the cooperation and support of the Santa Rosa County EOC, 4-H members will learn the ropes of geocaching and then begin to hide their own "treasures". Their "awareness caches" will be a bit different than the usual geocaching fare. Their locations will be used to increase awareness of disaster preparedness, locations that offer assistance and basic information on each location and the role it plays in the event of a disaster. Caches will be well stocked with first aid items and valuable information on 4-H and preparedness. Their full list of locations will be available on www.geocaching.com soon.
